School Uniform

The Mossbourne Academy uniform is one of the outward signs by which the local community recognises and makes judgments about the pupils.

It is important for pupils and the Academy that the way pupils present themselves is positive and acceptable and creates the impression of a disciplined and well ordered establishment. It is expected that all pupils will come to the Academy every day in neat, clean uniform, giving a message that our pupils take pride in belonging to the Academy. The support of parents in ensuring this is expected.

Members of staff are expected to support the uniform policy, both in a class setting and around the Academy. The uniform policy supports the ethos of the Academy by determining the boundaries of acceptable dress. The wearing of the Academy uniform will support equal opportunities at Mossbourne and it simplifies the day-to-day management of pupils.

All items listed form the regulation Academy uniform. Those prefaced by the term Academy" must be purchased from the Academy uniform stockist.

Religious and cultural issues

If, for religious or cultural reasons a pupil has to wear a head covering then this must be grey in colour to match the Academy uniform. Academy skirts are available and can be worn in two lengths, knee length or mid-calf length. Skirts must not be shortened or lengthened beyond these limitations.

Jewellery and hair

No jewellery is to be worn, except for small gold or silver stud earrings and a watch. No other form of body piercing is allowed. Jewellery must be removed before doing P.E lessons. Hair must be worn in an appropriate style. Heads must not be shaved, nor should there be any style which the Trustees believe would undermine the ethos or discipline of the Academy i.e. markings cut into the hair, dyed hair or any extreme fashion which would create any undue interest in the pupil. Shirts and ties should be worn appropriately, i.e. shirts must be tucked in, collars buttoned and ties worn neither too long nor too short. Outdoor coats must be black and have no logos, patterns or markings. They must be removed on entering the building.

Monitoring compliance

The form tutor will play an important role in monitoring uniform and helping to resolve any problems e.g. financial, or applying sanctions where it is appropriate. Form tutors will contact parents to resolve any recurring problems. Heads of Year may send pupils home to change, having first contacted the parents.

Pupils who persist in wearing jewellery, other than that allowed, will have these items confiscated. A letter will be sent to parents asking them to collect it. Parents will be asked to sign a receipt on collection. Staff confiscating jewellery should place it in an envelope, in the presence of the pupil. Both teacher and pupil should sign and date it. The envelope should be handed to the Senior Administrative Officer to be locked in a safe.

The Academy takes no responsibility for jewellery which should not have been brought into the Academy, and is subsequently lost or stolen. However, once confiscated, the Academy and its staff are responsible for ensuring its security.
