Academy Specialism

The recent announcement of our new specialism recognises Music as an area of excellence in the Academy.

We have a thriving Performing Arts Faculty which houses the Music and Drama departments. Classroom music teaching is outstanding and follows an engaging and challenging curriculum that has been uniquely designed to give all students the chance to develop their musicianship.

The strength of our provision lies in the many opportunities we provide for Mossbourne students.

Opportunities Outside the Classroom

There is a varied and extensive programme of enrichment activities (Chorus, Gospel Choir, Music Technology, Keyboard Club, Theory Club, Improvisation Workshop, School of Rock, Musical Theatre, Samba, African Drumming, Training Band, Senior Band, Academy Strings, Academy Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble) and the standards of these school ensembles is of exceptional quality. These groups perform regularly both in the school, the wider community and at prestigious national venues. Music works closely with the outstanding Drama department in the annual delivery of a large, spectacular production.

Facilities

At Mossbourne, the musical facilities are enviable, with plentiful instrumental resources, a fully equipped recording studio and Mac Suite of computers alongside several practice rooms. A very high proportion of our students take up music instrumental lessons taught by expert peripatetic music teachers who are all professional performers.

Music: a Key to Success

Success in Music enhances the effectiveness of the Academy. The study of Music supports autonomous learning so vital for success in education. Moreover, as one of the few subjects that engages both the analytical, logical left side of the brain and creative, expressive right side of the brain, music draws together the aspects that can lead towards students becoming a success on leaving Mossbourne.

Future Developments

In view of  our Academy specialism, we plan to develop our instrumental lesson programme, setting up a bursary scheme to widen access to the programme. We aim to become a beacon for A Level provision in Hackney, while also extending our enrichment offer to the KS5 students. We plan to augment our wide variety of musical activities, alongside strategies to improve singing for boys. Finally, we aim to raise the profile of Music in the Academy with increased performance opportunities for our students, and inaugurate a Mossbourne Musician of the Year competition.
