GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES
| Business Studies is the study of how businesses are set up, financed, organised and controlled. How people are employed, managed and paid. How goods are developed, produced and sold. How goods and services are priced and how local, national and international governments and organisations help or hinder business. |

Students will take the Unit 1 examination- Setting up a Business in the Summer of Year 10. Between February and April of Year 11 pupils will undertake a controlled assessment (Unit 3). Unit 2 is examined in the summer of Year 11.

BTEC National Diploma (Level 3)
BTEC Nationals are qualifications that are designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare them for employment. BTEC National Award offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the appropriate vocational sector.
The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC National Award in Business consists of four core units plus two specialist units that provide the completed qualification.

The students must then complete 8 optional units from:

A level business studies

A level business studies encourages the practical application of business concepts.
It is intended to promote active rather than passive understanding.
The course is broken into 4 units, two studied at AS level and two at A2 level.
AS level students focus on a new business setting up and managing growth of a small business.
At A2 level pupils will study larger businesses and their strategies for success as will as investigating real life change management and the impacts of the external environment.
Students are taught to develop theories and concepts within business scenarios and use their understanding to analyse possible causes, effects and implications then devising strategies for that particular business to benefit from in their situation.
Students enjoy the discussion based nature of the course and are expected to fully participate in debates using complex theories and real business examples.
AS Economics
Economics allows students to gain an understanding of economic concepts and theories through developing a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life.
Unit 1 – Markets and Market Failure: This unit looks at basic microeconomics such as demand and supply, the operation of the price mechanism and the causes of market failure.
Unit 2 – The National Economy: This unit introduces students to macroeconomics such as Government Policy, how it tackles inflation and unemployment, the Budget and how Britain can become more competitive.

Unit 3 - Business Economics and Distribution of Income: The Module also requires candidates to understand the operations of the labour market and the factors which influence relative wage rates, poverty and the distribution of income and wealth. Candidates should appreciate the ways in which developments in United Kingdom
Unit 4 - The National and International Economy: Candidates should appreciate the ways in which developments in the United Kingdom economy can be related to the global and European Union (EU) contexts.
Candidates should be prepared to propose, analyse and evaluate possible solutions to macroeconomic problems. They will be required to assess the impact and effectiveness of current government policies to deal with these problems as well as considering alternative policies.
This business venture involved the students setting up their business enterprise; preparation of a business plan which they had to present to their Bank Manager at HSBC; raising capital by the selling of company shares; promoting and selling their products to their customer base.Mossbourne Community Academy - Enterprise 2010/11Term 1Young Enterprise (Terms 1, 2 & 3)There are two Year 10 BTEC Business groups involved with the Young Enterprise programme, which they are completing through Business Curriculum time to help support their studies. There is also one Year 12 group who have set up a company through the Young Enterprise programme which we have offered on the 6th Form Enrichment Programme. This is offered to all 6th Form students, not just those studying a Business and Economics course. Marketing with the PTAA group of Year 11 BTEC Business students worked with the PTA to devise and conduct a Marketing Campaign for the annual school fair.
KS3 Business and Enterprise (Terms 1, 2 & 3)We have been keen for KS3 students to have the opportunity to be involved with Business/Enterprise activities. Therefore, we have two extension classes available to KS3 students: The Trading Game and Business. Enterprise AuditAn Enterprise Audit has been designed to help map current Enterprise Activities across all learning areas/the whole Academy. Term 2Enterprise Days:1.2.10 - Innovative Product Day (Dragons’ Den) – All Year 7 students will be involved with this Enterprise Day for the whole day. The day has been designed especially for MCA by the Hackney EBP – Inspire. This is to develop the student’s skills in Enterprise. 16.3.10 - Work Wise and Enterprise Day (Events Management for MTV @ Hackney Empire) - All Year 8 students will be involved with this Enterprise Day for the whole day. The day has been designed especially for MCA by the Hackney EBP – Inspire. This is to develop the student’s skills in Enterprise. Working in Cities – March 2010A group of Year 10 Business students will be taking part in the Working in Cities program. They will be spending the day in the City to experience what it would be like to work in the City in areas such as ‘Banking’. Enterprise AuditA whole school audit will be carried out to map current Enterprise Activities across all learning areas/the whole Academy. Enterprise ExamA Level 2 GCSE A*-C equivalent qualification for last Years Young Enterprise students. Term 3Dragons’ Den CompetitionWhole school: This will be the second annual whole school Dragons’ Den competition which is open to all students in all year groups. Students enter the competition in groups, with a brand new product idea. They have to demonstrate various Business and Enterprise skills in both stages of the competition. Enterprise AuditFrom the analysis of the audit, future development plans will be highlighted and included on the mid to long term Enterprise plan @ MCA. This will also involve all leaning areas contributing/offering Enterprise Activities and further Enterprise Days in all Year groups. Future PlansA mid term (3 Years) and long term (5 Years) plan will be produced for MCA to work towards developing Enterprise at the Academy. |
