A Message from the Principal
Peter Hughes |
Sir Clive Bourne believed the children of Hackney deserved the best; Mossbourne is the realisation of that dream. Over the past five years I have watched Mossbourne go from strength to strength under the leadership of Sir Michael Wilshaw; this strength is rooted in high expectations, doing the simple things right, and a belief that all children can succeed.
|
For the third year in succession Mossbourne is placed in the top ten best performing schools in the country. This result is testimony to the hard work and dedication of staff and students and the on-going support of parents. A confident and proud Academy is created through a network of strong relationships which are built on mutual respect and trust. As we move into a new era, with the opening of Mossbourne Victoria Park in 2014 and the rapidly expanding Clivebourne Sixth Form, I will continue to build a community that believes in its future. I am determined to uphold the values, ethos and vision that have made Mossbourne successful, while leaving no stone unturned to create an even brighter future. |

Sixth Form Centre for Students with Autism
Mossbourne Academy opened the first Sixth Form Centre for students with Autism in Hackney in September 2011. This vital provision, for post-16 students with Autism, was funded by the Department for Education, Hackney Learning Trust and the Sir Clive Bourne Family Trust. |

The Centre includes four fully-equipped kitchen areas, within a dedicated Life Skills suite, as well as study rooms, an office and a communication and social skills room. The centre also provides social areas to enable students to learn the important skills of socialising with other young adults. |
The curriculum is tailored to individual needs. Most students take a two-or-three-year course to study English and Functional Maths. Students also learn the all-important skills of independence and spend one day a week at Hackney Community College to build those important links between school and college and prepare them for the transition to college in the future. |
Simge Gul offically opens the Joybourne Centre |
The Joybourne Sixth Form Centre will cater for up to eight sixth form students with autism and is providing an excellent education for young people in Hackney, who would otherwise be forced to move to unfamiliar surroundings, sometimes miles away from their homes. It is already proving to be a huge success and will serve as a school-based model for other institutions serving the needs of students with Autism. |

ASDA, Stamford Hill Store Donation
|
'The girls’ football and netball teams of Mossbourne Community Academy have received a very kind donation of £500 towards their own team kit from the new ASDA store in Stamford Hill. For several years the boys’ teams have had their own special kit for inter-school matches but the girls have had to make do with their ordinary PE kit. The Mossbourne Parents’ Association had already raised £200 towards the girls’ kit, but were astonished when ASDA (who had donated boxes of sweets and biscuits to the raffle at the Winter Craft Fair) offered an additional £500. Samantha Bates, and another colleague from the ASDA Stamford Hill store, attended theYear Seven assembly on Thursday 2nd February to hand over the cheque to Alison Diver, head of the PE department.' |

We are delighted to announce that music is our new specialism at Mossbourne. As part of the thriving Performing Arts Faculty, music is already an area of excellence at the Academy.
In view of the specialism, the Music Department plans to:
- set up a bursary scheme to widen access to its instrumental programme
- become a beacon for A Level provision in Hackney
- extend its enrichment offer to the KS5 students
- introduce a Mossbourne Musician of the Year competition
- introduce a String Quartet residency alongside the already vast number of enrichment activities.
